High-growth potential minority businesses are more likely to thrive in an “accelerated growth” environment. The MBA invites minority businesses from all industries to apply to the program. However, it carefully recruits businesses that have a greater chance of experiencing accelerated growth based on the industry demands of the Tampa and Hillsborough County market. The Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation, in partnership with the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County, has identified the below industries that have seen significant growth in Tampa and Hillsborough County:

  • Defense & Security
  • Life Sciences & Healthcare
  • Financial & Professional Services
  • Educational Services
  • Information Technology
  • Manufacturing, Distribution & Logistics
  • Construction

Selection and Recruitment

MBA-qualifications.jpgFive to eight candidates are accepted to participate in the MBA each year. The cohort size allows for each program participant to receive the appropriate level of attention from program staff and volunteers, while building a support network with the other program participants.

Candidates undergo a rigorous vetting and selection process to ensure proper “fit” into the Minority Business Accelerator. The vetting and selection process includes:

  • Application Submittal, including required attachments
  • Panel Presentation 
  • Final Participant Selection 

Benchmark Qualifications

The MBA seeks, high-growth potential, Black and Hispanic businesses. High-growth potential indicates the company’s ability to generate larger profits, increase production and resources, such as hiring new employees, purchasing equipment, and/or expanding a physical location. 

Minimum qualifications for consideration are:

  • Black or Hispanic owned and operated business (>51%)
  • Headquartered in Tampa/Hillsborough County, Florida
  • Current business plan with a well-defined growth strategy 
  • Annual Gross Revenue of $500,000 +
