Tampa / Hillsborough County Provides Location Advantages For The Biomedical Industry

#2 – “Most cost effective large U.S. City to conduct business” (KPMG 2006)
#9 – “Best large city to do business” (Inc. Magazine 2006)
#13 – “America’s hottest city for business expansion” (Expansion Management 2006)

The Tampa MSA offers strong resources in university research, technology transfer and incubation, hospital- and clinic-based R&D, biotechnology, pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing, and medical device manufacturing. Sub-sector expertise, including biodefense and brain research, has elevated Tampa Bay's stature in the life sciences community.

The region's health care sector is a massive and established economic engine that can help drive bioscience forward. At the University of South Florida alone, hundreds of physician-researchers generate over $145 million annually in grants to further their work. Dozens of area hospitals and hundreds of area physicians are involved in ongoing clinical trials.

Biomedical Research
World class translational research, patient care, and technology commercialization are underway at the University of South Florida, Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, and Byrd Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute.

An extensive network of advanced care hospitals, research institutes, and clinics, provide biomedical companies the access to dedicated clinical research services and patient care, drug, device, and procedural research studies and trials.

Business Climate
Tampa shows significant cost-saving advantages for pharmaceutical manufacturing, biomedical R&D, and clinical trials, compared to the leading US bioscience centers such as Boston, Raleigh, or San Diego, according to KPMG, LLP. KPMG’s 2006 Competitive Alternatives study measured the combined impact of twenty-seven location-sensitive business operating costs, such as labor, taxes, and utility costs.
