Tampa keeps adding people, and people need things: homes repaired, taxes filed, kids taught, pets groomed, offices cleaned. If you are weighing where to start or move a business, the numbers here make a plain case. Here is what the public data says, and where to get free help once you decide.
The market keeps getting bigger
Hillsborough County had an estimated 1,574,115 residents on July 1, 2025, up 7.8% from the April 2020 base, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The City of Tampa alone had about 413,554 residents, roughly 7.3% more than in 2020.
Zoom out and the picture grows. The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro held about 3.42 million people in 2025, per Census figures published by FRED, and Florida's own estimates rank it as the second-largest metro in the state, behind only Miami.
What that means for you: every new household needs the same short list of local services. Businesses that serve homeowners, families and small companies grow with the population, not against it.
The port and the base anchor the economy
Port Tampa Bay reports about $34.6 billion in annual economic value and 192,201 jobs tied to its operations, 16,119 of them direct, based on a 2023 Martin Associates study. The port calls itself Florida's largest and most diverse port, handling about 33 million tons of cargo a year.
MacDill Air Force Base, home to U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command, reported a $4.1 billion economic impact in fiscal 2023 and 15,390 people working on base. Logistics, defense contracting and the services that support military families all draw from that demand.
Read the job numbers honestly
The metro's unemployment rate was 4.8% in July 2026, not seasonally adjusted, against a national rate of 4.4%, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is a slightly softer job market than the country as a whole. For a new business, it can mean an easier time hiring. For a business selling big-ticket items, it is worth watching.
