How to choose
Get the spot price first
Look up the live gold or silver spot price before you call anyone. Offers on bullion follow spot, so you can tell in seconds whether a quote is fair.
Ask for the offer as a percent of spot
A good shop will tell you its number plainly, such as a set percent of melt value. Vague answers or pressure to decide on the spot are red flags.
Separate bullion from collectibles
Common bullion coins sell close to melt. Rare dates, graded coins and errors can be worth far more, so ask the shop to price those one by one.
Get two or three quotes
Prices vary from shop to shop. Calling a few dealers on the same day is the easiest way to get top dollar.
Florida rules for selling coins and gold
- In Florida, the sale of gold, silver or platinum bullion (or any combination) is exempt from sales tax when the total sales price in a single transaction exceeds $500; bullion sold for $500 or less is taxable. Source
- Florida exempts coins or currency (other than legal tender sold at face value) from sales tax when the single-transaction price exceeds $500; jewelry or objects made from coins or bullion are taxed on the full sales price. Source
- Florida secondhand dealers must verify a seller's identity with a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver license or military ID), record the ID type, issuing agency and number, take the seller's right thumbprint, and have the seller sign a statement that they own the goods (s. 538.04). Source
- Unless other arrangements are made with law enforcement, a Florida secondhand dealer must deliver a transaction record to the sheriff or police chief within 24 hours of acquiring goods, and must keep transaction forms for at least 3 years (s. 538.04(1)). Source
- A Florida secondhand dealer may not resell, alter or melt a precious metal, gemstone or jewelry item for 30 calendar days after acquiring it; most other secondhand goods have a 15-day hold (s. 538.06). Source
- Florida's definition of 'secondhand goods' excludes coins and assayed gold, silver, platinum, palladium or rhodium bullion properly marked for weight and fineness, and persons at antique, coin or collectible shows are exempt from Part I, so ID/hold rules mainly apply to items like jewelry and scrap rather than marked bullion and coins (s. 538.03). Source
- Florida secondhand dealers may not knowingly transact with anyone under 18, may not do business between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m., and may not conduct transactions through a pickup window for cars (s. 538.15). Source
- Mail-in secondhand precious metals dealers in Florida must register with the state, record the seller's driver license or other government ID number, hold purchased goods for 10 calendar days after payment, and pay by check to a bank account or through a licensed money services business (ss. 538.32-538.35). Source
- Dealers file IRS Form 1099-B only for certain quantities: 25 or more 1-oz gold Krugerrands, Maple Leafs or Mexican 50 Pesos, 1,000+ U.S. 90% silver dollars, 2,000+ silver halves or 10,000+ silver dimes; modern American Gold and Silver Eagles are not on the reportable list. Source
- Spot price is the benchmark price for one troy ounce of pure, unrefined metal; retail buyers pay spot plus a premium, while dealer buyback offers are generally based on current spot rather than the premium originally paid. Source
This is general information, not legal or financial advice. Rules change, so confirm with the source or a licensed professional.
Common questions
Do I need ID to sell coins in Tampa?
For jewelry and scrap gold, yes. Florida secondhand dealer law requires a government photo ID and a thumbprint. Coins and properly marked bullion fall outside the definition of secondhand goods, but most shops still ask for ID.
Do I pay sales tax when I buy gold or coins in Florida?
Not on bullion or coin purchases over $500 in a single transaction. Purchases of $500 or less are taxable, and jewelry made from coins or bullion is taxed on the full price.
How much will a Tampa coin shop pay for my gold?
Offers on bullion track the current spot price. Expect a shop to pay somewhat under spot so it can cover its costs and resell. Collectible coins are priced on rarity and grade instead.
